SANATH'S ISSUE FOR FUNNY ITEMS IN CRICKET

sanath Jayasuriya, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee who expressed his strong displeasure about the 2 comedy items which gave rise to a sensation at the Dialog Cricket Awards Ceremony held some days ago has called for an immediate inquiry into the matter and has further requested that punishment be meted out to those who are responsible for it, it is reported. Since several issues have emerged from the said comedy items performed which has insulted his personal life, Sanath Jayasuriya has also requested that those behind this incident should be looked into. However, in the process it is understood that some of those at the Cricket Control Board has expressed their deepest apologies to Sanath Jayasuriya.

However, according to reliable sources it is said that Sanath Jayasuriya has not been satisfied with the response he had received.

As such, Jayasuriya has once again informed that until a fair investigation into this issue is carried out, he would keep up with the fight. It is understood that Jayasuriya's contention had been that he never expected that this form of defamatory responses at an award ceremony for which a sum of Rs. 100 likhs had been spent and that he would under no circumstances approve issues brought forward to sling mud at him other than about any references to the game of cricket or selection matters.

While a finger had been pointed at the Sales division of the Sri Lanka Cricket Association and the tournament organisation committee by both Jayasuriya and other related persons, it is said that a complaint in this respect had been sent also to the Honble. President of Sri Lanka. Incidentally, the reason why this items of comedy was subjected to criticism was that certain cricket players were offended and old issues were once again brought forward during the performance.

During the 'Puswedilla' item, Lasith Malinga's popular joke "maawa dekala nedda? Yanawa yanna manussayo" was subjected to humour while Sanath Jayasuriya going to play cricket even after reaching 40 years was similarly made fun of. In the same way, fun was made of the mistakenly-uttered phrase of Sanath Jayasuriya, "pas coming out" while further humour was added with a gesture because he had gone to India and learned a type of dance.

It was also said that during demonstration of comedy items, the point that cricket presidents need not ask for votes and that they are successful in having their names recorded in the election forms.

At this point it was mentioned elsewhere about the Minister's son who had tried to open the door of an aeroplane in the recent past. Though some members of the audience happen to criticise that the words used in the comedy item was flung at cricket authorities and the players as well, most members of the audience dismissed it as a part of the comedy brought forward to make the audience break into a laughter.

It was reported that Show Town Entertainments who organised the award ceremony had not planned to bring Sunil Perera or the 'Puswedilla' item but that it happened as a request of the officials of the Cricket Control Board.

It is also reported that a female officer who had been subjected to the anger of the officials had been at the back of all this.

MOTHER HELPS HER SON TO ABUSE 15 YR OLD GIRLFRIEND

An incident where a mother who had been arrested by the police for having prepared a bed in the house for her son and provided support for him to behave as husband with his underage lover is reported from Gamola. The girl aged 15 years and 7 months is a resident of Rajathalana area in Gampola. Her mother and father lives  separately. The girl lives with her grandmother.

On the day of the incident the girl after discussing with her supposed lover over the phone had arranged to come to his house in Pallewlathenna in the evening. On the girl's arrival the boy's mother had warmly welcomed the girl happily and had requested her to spend the night there and leave the following day. Though this proposal was somewhat strange, she had given her consent to this.

Accordingly the mother had arranged a separate room for them to sleep. That night as the girl did not return home, the grandmother had searched for her for a long time the following day, Finding that the girl was not in the house, had complained to the Gampola police.

The police on making inquiries were able to gather that she was in the house of the boy, supposed to be her lover. On a statement recorded from her by the police, she had said that she was sleeping together with the boy on the same bed that night, but nothing untowards happened from him.

However, since the grandmother strongly insisted and believed that the girl had been abused, expressed this to the police. It was after this that the police took the boy into custody.

The boy was produced in Gampola Magistrate's Courts on the first hearing and was released on a personal bond of Rs.50,000 while the medical report of the girl was received on May 06th confirming that the girl was sexually abused. I can block the Facebook - President

The Hon. President participating at the prize-giving ceremony of the Panadura Sri Sumangala Vidyalaya yesterday said that browsing the Facebook is not a favourable activity for schoolgoing children in Sri Lanka. He further requested that trust should not be placed on the Facebook which has now become an epidemic. He explained this point as follows:

"I went to parliament when I was young. However much work I had those days ... I attended lectures at Law College and studied Law too. So ... do your work without wasting time ... keep away from unnecessary things. It's true that we should learn Technology ... but this thing called Facebook is not such a good thing. This is not only an epidemic to us ... but also to the children. We can close these things ... there are methods for that. But we have no trust in doing that with the help of the Law ... we have a trust in you daughters ... your upbringing is important to us. Those whom we see at home are more important to us than whom we do not see in the Facebook. Therefore, don't keep that much of a trust on what you get from Facebook".

Sangakkara masterclass trumps Buttler blitz

Sri Lanka levelled the series in a Lord’s thriller in which two batsmen stood head and shoulders above their team-mates. Sri Lanka needed a magnificent century from Kumar Sangakkara, who got support from a scratchy Tillakaratne Dilshan to set a highly competitive target of 301. That looked plenty enough for the win until Jos Buttler joined Ravi Bopara in the 29th over and proceeded to hit almost every ball out of the middle, posting an extraordinary century of his own. But even that wasn’t quite enough to secure a most unexpected of wins.
The winning margin of seven runs, with the result still in the balance in the 100th over of the day, was the first close result of the four One-Day Internationals, but the crowd will remember two great innings long after they have forgotten the result.
There was no sign of the thrills to come as Kusal Perera, in for his first match since the Twenty20 International 11 days ago, played a short but sweet T20-style knock to get Sri Lanka up and running after the Old Trafford horror show. If somewhat premeditated, it looked a smart move from Sri Lanka, as it allowed Dilshan to ease himself into the match against some disciplined bowling from Jimmy Anderson and Harry Gurney.
Perera’s fun didn’t last long, as he swiped once too often at Gurney and edged to Chris Jordan, who went full length to his left to hang on to a sensational catch. That brought Sangakkara to the crease at 26 for 1 for the first of the match’s two old firm partnerships that have so often defined Sri Lanka’s innings. Gurney, looking more and more like Dirk Nannes, bounced him early, but Sangakkara, back at the scene of his extraordinary Cowdrey Lecture of 2011, would need more than that to put him off his stride.
It was the ninth over before the Dilscoop was unveiled, two successive fours his reward, though the attempt at the hat-trick failed. That little burst of scoring brought the total up to 45 for 1 at the end of the Power Play, England’s discipline reining in Sri Lanka’s aggression. It was the 18th over before the shackles were broken, with consecutive fours from Sangakkara off Joe Root, lifting his scoring rate from 50 to 80 in three blows.
The Sri Lanka hundred was raised in the 20th over, with Dilshan and Sangakkara both set after working hard on a pitch that was sticky enough to make timing shots a challenge. Sangakkara was first to his fifty, off just 53 balls, Dilshan raised his half-century off 72 balls. At the halfway mark, Sri Lanka had 134 of 1 and were asking questions of England, who needed a wicket to dent the batting foundation being readied for the late charge.
Sangakkara raised his century in the 39th over off 95 balls, an innings steeped in the 350 previous occasions on which he has taken guard in ODIs. There were none of Dilshan’s hijinks, just a commitment to play through the early stages and then hit the bad (indeed, sometimes the average) ball for four and block the good ones for singles or dots.
Sangakkara fell in pursuit of quick runs incongruously and inelegantly, stumped off James Tredwell as he sprawled in his attempt to recover his ground. Dilshan, never fluent, was eventually undone by his signature stroke, his stumps splayed by Anderson as he tried to get the ball over the ‘keeper’s head for a fourth time. The two old stagers had added 172 at just under a run a ball in contrasting style, with Dilshan’s contribution of 65 testimony to his ability to grind out runs even if well short of his best form.
When the 200 was raised in the 37th over with just the openers’ wickets in the debit column, Sri Lanka was looking at 300, probably just a little over par on a pitch that only Sangakkara had mastered in terms of timing. Mahela Jayawardene was no help towards that objective, trying to hit himself out of a bad trot, but only succeeding in looping a catch to Anderson, just 7 off 14 balls his contribution.
Angelo Mathews was the most effective batsman when the slog was on, and with only the centurion at ease at the crease, Sri Lanka had done very well to get up to a round 300 at the closure. England, not for the first time in this series, had bowled well, with Anderson and Gurney looking very good with the new ball, the effort only undermined by an inexplicably profligate 12 wides, one of which ran away for four more. If England had learned anything in its almost four hours in the field (a ridiculous length of time to deliver 50 overs), it was that there would be no chances to sit in for a quiet spell of five overs for 15 runs if this target was to be reached. The match was in the balance as its second innings began.
Lasith Malinga, his mojo very much back, had other thoughts, steaming in, bowling full and shaping it away and in to the batsmen just enough to see off openers Alastair Cook (on review) and Ian Bell via the edge within his first eight balls. That left Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance and Joe Root to rebuild the innings, negating any opportunity to hit out in the Power Play. The tenth over saw England’s reply 11 runs short of Sri Lanka at the same stage, with one fewer wicket in hand.
No boundary was scored between the third ball of the ninth over and, incredibly, the second of the 31st, in part due to Sri Lanka’s bowling, but mainly due to England’s lack of ambition and feeble weight of stroke in the top four. That may be a recipe to chase 240, but it meant that an awful lot of faith was being placed in Eoin Morgan, Ravi Bopara and Jos Buttler.
Ballance, trying to hit a much needed boundary, edged a reverse sweep to Sangakkara behind the stumps to bring Morgan to the crease with the asking rate almost eight from 26 overs – not quite out of sight, but distantly on the horizon. That feeling was underlined by the halfway stats which showed England’s 101 for 3 in a poor light compared to Sri Lanka’s halfway mark of 134 for 1. The 43-run deficit on the Duckworth-Lewis target looked about right.
Sure enough, the asking rate preyed on England’s minds with Root and Morgan falling to desperate strokes as the batsmen seemed incapable of scoring at more than four runs per over. Buttler’s sixth ball brought ironic cheers, as the first boundary for well over an hour came from a firmly hit reverse sweep, but still accumulation appeared to be all the batsmen were interested in – or all they were capable of – until Buttler, just as the game appeared gone for good, applied a weight of stroke so far unseen in the innings and injected some much needed impetus to the reply. It felt like England moved from the 20th century into the 21st century whenever the explosive wicketkeeper was on strike.
Buttler went to his fifty off 34 balls with a six off Nuwan Kulasakera, a blow that brought the ask down to 120 off 13 overs with a sliver of belief weaving round the ground. That sliver grew into something approaching a ribbon as Buttler – going like a train – and Bopara wrapped up the Power Play with 50 runs from the five overs and the target down to 92 off the last 10 overs – the game was very much on.
The turnaround in batting attitude and, worryingly for England, perhaps batting skills, was illustrated best by the fact that the 28 completed overs before Buttler and Bopara joined forces contained just one that went for seven runs: of the 15 complete overs that comprised their partnership, 10 went for seven runs or more. That reversal owed little to the Lankan bowling or fielding, which remained good under pressure – it had everything to do with the batsmen’s desire (and ability) to hit boundaries.
Bopara top edged a sweep to Thiramanne at short fine leg to be out for 51 off 47 balls, not as quick as he would have liked, but a perfect knock with Buttler going so well at the other end. That made for a target of 56 off five overs, with Chris Jordan – no mug – in the middle with Buttler, now right in the zone. Kulasekara was welcomed back to the attack with two astonishing sixes smashed over extra cover – and England had gone from 150 to 250 off 71 deliveries.
Kulasekara’s over went for 20 and the match was tilting England’s way for the first time all day.
Buttler’s hundred came off 61 balls with nine fours and four sixes, the Lancashire man playing a completely different game to his team-mates – indeed, a completely different game to any other Englishman had ever played (though not quite any other England batsman). He perished, run out for 121 off 74 balls, many of which were hit as cleanly as any hit by any batsman in history, his personal tally showing 15 of England’s 20 boundaries – this on a pitch which had troubled all but Sangakkara.
There was to be no fairytale for Buttler as England fell seven runs short of its target, despite scoring more runs off the bat, England’s wide count costing them dearly. The teams go to Edgbaston for the deciding rubber all square at 2-2: England fans go home with a new hero to thrill them as no batsman has since, well, since the man whose name everyone is trying not to mention. 50 overs cricket doesn’t get much better than this.

A DARK DAY IN SRI LANKA’S CRICKET HISTORY

Yesterday evening the 3rd a black was inserted to the annals in the history of the game of cricket in Sri Lanka .Our cricketers took a stand in disagreeing to the decision of the SLC authorities with regard to their contract payments which were pruned. They were on the verge of taking a decision not to sign the new contracts which were made by the SLC. Finally they successfully made changes to the contract payments made by the SLC according to their suggestions.
The earlier contract expired on the 28th February and the deadline for the new contract had to be signed by the 2nd of March. Nevertheless not a single player bothered and took interest to sign the new contract by the 2nd of March. They abstained from signing and were like on a protest or a strike.
When 23 members of the National team and others were to sign the new agreements they were faced with a grave conflict. Furner skipper Mahela Jayawardena who was away on a holiday to Thailand was not bothered but two senior players Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga were at a strong decision in this regard.
However yesterday evening ( 2rd of March) the Chairman of the new selection Committee Sanath Jayasuriya was able to have a discussion with the contracted players and were able to resolve the matter by agreeing to a 78% and thereby resolved the conflict.
This conflict had begun it is learnt as the payments that were given to contracted players were reduced by the executive committee of the SLC in relation to the payments paid in the previous years had gin way to this conflict.
It was suggested to pay the players 68% of the 78% that is paid to the SLC by the ICC as match fees. It was also suggested to withdraw the facilities offered to the spouses of cricketer’s to travel in Business class travel plus other privileges offered once a year for a tour abroad. This was one other reason for them to decide in objecting to signing of this new agreement, they also did not want to the six groups in the contracted players’ category to be brought down to four categories.
The Minister of sports was at a firm stand had even decided to appoint a new captain and a new vice captain and form a new team altogether by leaving all those experienced players, Because of this stand made by the Minister may have prompted them to sign the contracts they had earlier refused to sign.
Before the First test against the visiting Bangladesh is scheduled to commence on the 8th of February. The first practice match commenced yesterday the 3rd of March at the Matara Uyanwatta Stadium. On the previous night Kunar Sabgakkara had travelled to Matara to be in the side. As he was not allowed to play he had come back to Colombo on the 3rd.
After the meeting on the 3rd late evening Sangakkara and his colleagues had come out of the SLS premises with smiling faces. Former World cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga expressed his views to the media angrily expressed about the demands of the players who fought for the business class travel for their spouses is a big joke. He went on to add that there are more important issues to address than this business class travel. He accused all the agents ansd managers of players who make these demands.
When considering the 68% percentage a senior player would receive about Rs 40 lakhs for a month while a junior player would receive a fee of about Rs 20 lakhs for a month. These payments are in addition to other payments they are to receive for playing in matches. But they fought saying it is not enough
Regarding this conflict what the Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage had this to say...”.In other Test playing countries players are paid only 25% of the ICC payments. Our players are paid 69%.When they are paid very much over the payments made in other countries, they are demanding a further 10% more. This is not the payment for one pound of flesh but for a 1 ½ pound of flesh. For 8 of the senior players are paid around Rs 40 lakhs. Accordingly a sum of Rs 480 lakhs is paid.  For those who are paid less the total amount paid to them is Rs 240 lakhs. While paid such a large sum they are demanding a further 10%.Is it reasonable? Are we not spending for our under 19 team players? Who also travel overseas? We have to spend money for side pitches and for cricket equipment it is not only for the players payments but there are many expenses we have to meet.”

Saudi Arabia to fine people for late payments for maids

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Labor has toughened measures against violators of labor rights, moving to impose up to 5,000 riyals ($1300) on employers who do not pay domestic workers their wages on time.

A Labor Ministry official said the new measures will go into effect within 60 days and are aimed at protecting the employment rights of foreign workers.

The new measures also require Saudi employers to give domestic workers at least nine hours of rest time daily and at least one full day off a week, unless otherwise a different arrangement is mutually agreed in a written contract.

Ibrahim al-sheddi, of the Saudi Human Rights Commission, told Al Arabiya Net that "the new measures are part of a series of regulations that the commission has followed up with the concerned authorities."

He said the commission is assisting the Ministry of Labor to develop a system that ensures the rights of workers and employees alike.

"There hasn't been a [clear] national system for labor. There have been contracts that differ from one recruitment office to another and now all contracts must follow this new system, which is an umbrella for all types of domestic labor."

Meanwhile, a labor ministry official said that an electronic system that will facilitate the recruitment of foreign labor would be launched in a few weeks. The electronic system is expected to resolve a series of problems currently facing the labor market. - See more at: http://www.nation.lk/edition/breaking-news/item/29774-saudi-arabia-to-fine-people-for-late-payments-for-maids.html#sthash.Dlm6zO4G.dpuf

Tamil foundation loses charity status over LTTE links

The Canadian federal government revoked a Toronto-area Tamil foundation’s charitable status over the weekend, saying it provided financial support for groups that are part of the support network for the Tamil Tigers.

According to a Canada Revenue Agency audit, the Canadian Foundation for Tamil Refugee Rehabilitation (CAFTARR) provided more than $700,000 to organizations outside Canada that were “non-qualified donees.”

The CRA served notice of the revocation, effective Dec. 10, last month. It first warned of potential revocation in November 2009, after conducting an audit of the foundation’s activity from June 2004 to May 2008.

The foundation provided $620,000 in tsunami relief money to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) in May 2005 and January 2006, and $113,930 to the Ramakrishna Mission of Sri Lanka from February 2005 to June 2007, according to the audit. The donations made up 81 per cent of the foundation’s total revenue during the period reviewed.

In a letter to the foundation’s lawyer, the CRA said it believes “on the basis of publicly available information” that both the TRO and the Mission are part of the Tamil Tigers’ support network.

Officially known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the militant organization operated from 1976 until 2009 when it was defeated by the Sri Lankan military. The Harper government listed it as a terrorist organization in 2006.

In its response to the CRA, the foundation said it “has no ties to any terrorist or political group” and the TRO was a registered voluntary social services organization in Sri Lanka whose activities received recognition from the Canadian, U.S. and Sri Lankan governments. It also said it had an agreement with the Mission since 1988 to fund a children’s welfare program in Sri Lanka.

The CRA also says the organization failed to maintain adequate books and records and improperly issued tax receipts on behalf of a third party. The revocation means the group is no longer exempt from income tax and can no longer issue donation tax receipts.

CAFTARR was founded in 1985 and has a mailing address in Mississauga. Its president, Arunasalam Arasaratnam, declined to comment.

The foundation’s lawyer Hari S. Nesathurai said he couldn’t discuss the case specifically without his client’s permission, but in his general experience the CRA charities directorate has been “unreasonable” and “very dogmatic.”

Spotlight CCTV" shop-robbery in Ambalantota

Shop robbed .... by wrapping spotlights with cloth ... thinking they were CCTV cameras

These days CCTV cameras have become an obstacle for shop-robbers where their activities are concerned. In order to avoid that obstacle, certain robbers have resorted to destroying them while other have tried to carry on the robbery by closing or wrapping the camera with something.
Recently, a gang of robbers who had tried to rob a textile shop in Ambalantota had been misled  and had wrapped a spotlight meant for focusing the light on the textiles in the shop for better attention with pieces of cloth thinking that it was the CCTV camera before they launched their robbery.

This shop actually did not have any CCTV cameras. The robbers had been led astray by the spotlight which looked like the camera.

Several valuable items in the shop have been looted in the robbery.

Sri Lankan murdered in UK while out delivering pizza

Sri Lankan delivering pizzas in the night ...
 meets with death in UK

A Sri Lankan youth who had been serving at a Domino pizza restaurant in a South Yorkshire area in the United Kingdom, it is reported had been suddenly found murdered last Sunday night while on his way delivering pizzas. The dead body of Thavisha Peiris was found with injuries on a roadway in Crescent area in South Sheffield. The police said that he had been attacked and killed with a sharp knife. Three persons have been taken into custody by Yorkshire police under suspicion on that occasion.

Thavisha, a resident from Colombo had left to UK from Sri Lanka about two and a half years ago. Thavisha, in order to follow a degree course in computer software engineering had enrolled with Sheffield Halam University. He had finally finished his studies there and had subsequently been looking for employment; remaining in UK. Later he had found employment with Domino Pizza Restaurant where he was working in order to earn an extra income.

The sudden demise of 25 year old Thavisha was a problem to inmates of his lodging-place too. What they say is that they are surprised at this kind of finale that he had had to face because someone like Thavisha lived a quiet type of life and caused nobody any kind of problem.

Though the police arrested 3 persons over this killing, no reports on the investigations have so far been received and the reason for murder too has still not been revealed.
